
About TREE/e
TREE/e stands for Timber Research, Engineering and Education / Eindhoven. TREE/e is a group within the unit of ‘Structural Engineering and Design’ of the Department of the Built Environment at TU/e. It focuses on knowledge of the use of timber in structures. As can be derived from the name, we focus on timber research, embed this in the educational program, focus on the impact on timber engineering and are part of TU/e.
The main topics of our research program involve timber and moisture, shrinkage of timber structures, vibrations, robustness, fire, building systems, circularity and innovation.

Mission Statement
The TREE Research Group (Timber Research Engineering & Education) responds to the growing need for sustainable building to reduce CO₂ emissions and mitigate the impact of the construction sector on climate change. Rather than a gradual evolution, timber construction is currently experiencing a revolution, driven by demands for taller, faster, and more efficient buildings. However, knowledge development is lagging behind practice, making continuous research essential for a viable long-term timber industry.
Rooted in Eindhoven University of Technology, TREE connects scientific innovation with engineering practice to develop next-generation timber solutions. The group advances holistic design methods that integrate safety, reliability, comfort and environmental performance, while addressing large-scale timber structures, hybrid systems, circular construction, and digital design.
TREE promotes knowledge development in modern timber engineering by strengthening the link between academia and practice. Through close collaboration with industry and education of future engineers and designers, TREE fosters an open ecosystem that supports innovation, standards development, and a resilient, low-carbon built environment.

Within our ateliers, all students share a strong commitment to innovation and sustainability. Throughout their projects, they maintain an article that is regularly updated to reflect the latest developments. At the conclusion of each project, the article is finalized, and a full report is produced, often accompanied by a summary paper.
